Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra: Lyrics, Meaning and Chant

Umesh Guruji chanting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. A mantra for invoking the energy of Shiva, powerful masculine energy for transmuting darkness to light.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, the great mantra that overcomes death, is the mantra of Shiva, a verse of the Rig Veda. Here Umesh Guruji chants it in Varanasi, the city of Shiva, in two long and slow halves, again and again: you can simply listen, or chant along with him.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra in Sanskrit

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra lyrics in English letters

Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam
urvarukamiva bandhanan mrityor mukshiya mamritat

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra meaning

We worship the three-eyed one, fragrant, who nourishes all beings. As the ripe cucumber is freed from its vine, may we be freed from death, and not from immortality.

Tryambakam, the three-eyed, is Shiva: Umesh Guruji connects the third eye with Ajna, the third eye chakra. In India this mantra is chanted for healing, for long life and to let go of the fear of death. The prayer is like a fruit that leaves the plant when it is ready: free me from death and from the fear of death, not from what never dies. Umesh speaks about death and rebirth in the lesson Life After Death.

How to chant it

Slowly and deeply, many times, in the same melody, as Umesh sings it here. The best times, he says, are early morning and sunset, when there is a lot of prana in the air.
